The Vision Action Network of Washington County proudly announces the winner of this year's Cameron Award for Outstanding Community Collaboration: Animal Protection Multi-Disciplinary Team.

There has long been an established link between domestic violence and animal abuse. The Animal Protection Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) was created in 2010 to end that cycle. This collaboration of the Washington County District Attorney's Office, Washington County Animal Services, multiple law enforcement agencies, advocates for victims of domestic violence, and animal advocates has transformed our community into a better, more compassionate place for people and for animals.

In just three years, the MDT has changed Washington County in fundamental ways. It has educated people in key positions -- and the community as a whole -- on the link between violence toward people and animal abuse. It has created a safe haven so that no person has to choose between the safety of a pet and leaving a domestic violence situation. It has created a team approach to animal crime investigation and prosecution that is creating extraordinary results. And amazingly, this has been accomplished without dedicated funding. The partners have made this effort a priority and have allocated staff time accordingly. To learn more, please visit www.visionactionnetwork.org.

Since 2005 the Cameron Award has been presented annually to organizations and individuals that embrace collaboration and epitomize a commitment to working across multiple sectors of the community. The Award is named after Charlie Cameron to honor his leadership and to inspire others to embrace the collaborative vision he repeatedly demonstrated. Mr. Cameron was Washington County Administrator from 1986 to 2005 and was a founding Board member of the Vision Action Network.

Animal Protection Multi-Disciplinary Team was honored at the Vision Action Network's Annual Celebration on Thursday June 13, 2013, 4-6pm at the Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center in Hillsboro.

The Vision Action Network is a private nonprofit organization committed to the promotion and support of collaborative community-based problem solving in Washington County.
