Rahul Gandhi further stressing upon the strength of rural India cited the example of how one British Minister when asked him why India was progressing, he requested him to accompany him to the villages from where the real strength of the country emanates. And the visiting Minster was in complete awe of the pragmatism and power of rural India after hardly interacting with the men and women of the village for 5 minutes. He lamented the fact that rather than appreciating, the NDA and its partners criticized him for showcasing the poverty of India to the world.
Rahul Gandhi countered that what NDA lacked was the basic understanding that the power of India added from its poor people. They are the ones whose sweat goes into glitzy buildings and other developmental marvels. It was Congress he said that has brought in schemes like MNREGS, passed Adivasi Bill, implemented Sachar Committee Report, waived loans to the tune of 60,000 crores and thus opened the doors of banks for the poor farmers. Congress brought the Right to Education Bill and was in the process of bringing in the Food Security Bill. All these were meant for the poor and the under privileged. Despite criticisms about being populist and contrary advice from many economists and intellectuals who said that such efforts for the poor lead to sever wastage of nation's resources, Congress government implemented these programmes because it remains a government of the poor feels for the neglected.
