Jackie "Moms" Mabley -- "The Original Queen Of Comedy"
"The Original Queen Of Comedy Part 1". Jackie "Moms" Mabley was born Loretta Mary Aiken on March 19th, of 1894 in Brevard, North Carolina. After being pressured by her stepfather to marry a much older man and encouraged by her grandmother to strike out on her own, she went to Cleveland, Ohio with a traveling minstrel show as a singer and entertainer. She took her stage name, Jackie Mabley, from an early boyfriend and would bring millions to the point of wetting themselves with her clean but very political humor.
During the 20s and 30s she appeared in androgynous clothing and performed several of her early "lesbian stand-up" routines. "Moms" was one of the top women doing stand-up in her heyday, and eventually recorded more than 20 albums of comedy routines. She appeared in movies, on television, and in clubs and performed at the Michigan Women's Festival shortly before her death in 1975.
We present "Moms" Mabley in the early 1960's performing some of her famous comedy routines. What great clean humor!
