USAID's Developing Agricultural Communities project has been teaching up-to-date horticulture techniques and marketing basics to farmers in the Aileu area since 2008 and has successfully helped them to gain skills needed to move from subsistence to market-driven agriculture. Participating farmers are now the main source of fresh produce for many restaurants and supermarkets in Dili. Through training and practice, farmers are increasingly becoming self-sufficient in both the production and sales of their products. This field-to-fork approach ensures farmers have a market for their produce, a timely source for quality seeds and inputs, and the knowledge of sustainable agriculture practices to maintain the health of the soil and environment.
