Metropolitan Klezmer performs "Shpil du Fidl, Shpil" [Play You Fiddle, Play], a Yiddish tango: Melissa Fogarty - vocals; Debra Kreisberg - clarinet & alto sax; Pam Fleming - trumpet; Reut Regev - trombone; Ismail Butera - accordion; Michael Hess - violin; Dave Hofstra - bass; Eve Sicular - drums. Words: Molly Picon. Music: Abe Ellstein. Arranged for Metropolitan Klezmer by Eve Sicular & Debra Kreisberg. (Studio & live audio tracks appear on our SURPRISING FINDS and TRAVELING SHOW cd releases.) The lyrics tell of a secret passion revealed only by the violin's tune; it gnaws and shakes this heart so intensely that the fiddle strings may burst. This song is featured in the 1936 Yiddish film hit YIDL MITN FIDL, starring Molly Picon disguising herself as 'Yidl,' a klezmer boy... Lovesick over another fiddler, she gives voice to her feelings for him while still in drag. Videography by Sasha Wortzel & Rich Brotman; editing by Rich Brotman at Magnetic Post. Live at Metropolitan Klezmer's 15th anniversary show, April 2009, NYC's Drom nightclub stage. (Full liner notes including Yiddish lyrics, English translation and transliteration available in SURPRISING FINDS booklet: http://cdbaby.com/metklez3 ).
