A local writer named Jeff Woodburn discovered that John Steinbeck was seen at the exclusive Spalding Inn when he came through the Lancaster, N.H., area in the fall of 1960. Whether he slept at or merely ate dinner at the Spalding Inn on his way east to Maine or when he came through Lancaster again on his way west isn't clear. Woodburn, who once worked as a busboy at the inn, showed me around the place, which was almost as empty as that hotel in "The Shining." Read the details in my Amazon.com book "Dogging Steinbeck."
