On Saturday 16 July, people from across Portsmouth gathered in Guildhall Square to demonstrate against the fascists within the EDL. Our efforts ensured that they could not enter the square as the police soon came to the realisation that there were a great number of people standing in opposition to the EDL.
The demonstration was organised by the UAF ('Unite Against Fascism') but there were people from all political factions: socialists, Liberal Democrats, anarchists, Conservatives (I myself am a member of the Conservative Party), and so on. That day saw people from across the political spectrum come out (despite the wet conditions) to defend the City of Portsmouth from Nazi scum.
Our protest remained peaceful at all times. Theirs was unpleasant and a disgrace. Seven EDL members were arrested. Not a single one of us was.
