"The Mermaid's Tears" is a tune that truly captured my attention from the first time I heard it. The composer, Dorothy Hawkinson, cites the story of a mermaid who rescued a sea captain when his ship went down in the San Juan Islands as the inspiration for this tune. The story tells of the mermaid being banished to the ocean depths by Neptune for falling in love with the captain and rescuing him, never to return to the surface again. The legend holds that her tears continue to wash up on the beaches of Puget Sound to this day as beachglass - broken pieces of glass polished smooth by the waves and the sand.
Dorothy Hawkinson kindly granted me permission to post her tune, which I performed and recorded in the cave through Mushroom Rock in Himalaya Bay. The focus starts a little fuzzy at first, but - like tears in the eyes - becomes clearer as the song progresses.
