Located on a major fault line, Istanbul faces high seismic risk. In 1999, a major earthquake around the Turkish metropolis caused some 17,000 deaths and $5 billion in damages. To minimize the impact of any future disasters, the World Bank-supported Istanbul Seismic Risk Mitigation and Emergency Preparedness Project is helping the city rebuild or retrofit public buildings and infrastructure, improve its information systems, and train people to respond to emergencies.
