Strathmartine Mains (Love and Freedom) is a relatively recent song composed in the 1950s by Mary Brooksbank (1897 – 1978). Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, her family moved to Dundee when Mary was 10. Mary Brooksbank was a mother of seven, mill-worker and life-long socialist and joined the Communist Party, only to become disillusioned and expelled. She was also a musician and poet whose songs are still sung today. She used her industrial experience as a background for writings songs.
