More informations, facts and symptoms:
On February 10th 2012 my Quarter Horse 'Sun' (Please Jessies Star) had a terrible allergic reaction.
In the morning he was still running and playing with his best buddy and 'bodyguard' Azzaro. When I got to the stable about 2 hours later I've found him lying flat in his box... suffering. When I've called him he didn't move at all. He finally lifted up his head and looked at me when I stepped right beside him. I was shocked !
His mouth, nostrils and eyelids were swollen twice the normal size and so was the part underneath his jaw and between the cheek bones. His nose was hard like a rock and the skin was about to rip from the stretching. We made him stand up, so his nose would be free and not covered with straw and also to keep his organism going. Sun was weak and had trouble to breathe since the swelling caused a contraction of the respiratory tracts. I was so scared he wouldn't survive this !
The vet took almost 2 hours (!) to get to the stable (he enjoyed his lunch even though we've called the emergency line !!!) and by the time he arrived, the swelling got worse and Sun already developed large and hard bumps all over his body, especially on his chest.
He's gotten 2 injections (anti-allergics) and some powder to mix with his feed for 3 days. When I've checked on him at 9 p.m. his eyes were swollen even more, but his nostrils a lot less. The next morning only a slight swelling on the eyelids and 2 or 3 tiny bumps on his body remained. On the 3rd day all symptoms were gone. Just the skin around his mouth and nose was a little chapped from being stretched so much. Now he's just as gorgeous as he used to be before.
It's unknown what caused the allergic reaction. He had the same feed, hay and straw as usual and we've been checking everything, but couldn't find anything suspicious. The vet said, it could've come from an insect (or maybe a spider bite ?!). Already during the last summer Sun was a little allergic to flies, but that only caused an itch and he scratched off all the fur on his head (that's why he still got some grey spots on his head). I just got informed that he had some allergic reactions before (for example to some horse wormers), but never as bad as this time.
Thanks a lot to Marie-Claude and Pascal for their help and support and of course for keeping me calm ! I really appreciate it being able to count on them no matter what and I know for sure that Sun does, too. Un grand 'merci' de Sun et moi à vous deux !!!
