Bruce Watson recalls the "Freedom Summer: The Savage Season That Made Mississippi Burn and Made America a Democracy " of 1964 when over 700 college students arrived in Mississippi to register African-American voters and create Freedom Schools to assist in the education of the populace. Their work was met with resistance exemplified through the disappearance of three volunteers, indiscriminate beatings, and the burnings of churches. Bruce Watson discusses his book at Lemuira Books in Jackson, Mississippi.
