Week 2 of the 2016 build season began with CDR, Critical Design Review. Here, each mechanism team lead presented their team's more solidified designs for their mechanisms, including presenting risks, mitigations, and specific quantities of parts that will be used, space that will be taken up, and what their ensemble will weigh. Additionally, the Hardware Captain presented the first (of many) drafts of the space allocations, the guidelines for volume that each mechanism may take up. After CDR, the team took a break for the week of Midterms, as the Howard County Public School System ceases after school activities during this time to allow students to focus on their studies. That Friday, the team met briefly, and then everyone hunkered down for Winter Storm Jonas. HCPSS schools were closed for the entire week, leaving students without time to meet at Atholton. However, students kept up work through teleconferences and online chats. After some of the streets got to be plowed out, the team was able to meet at USRA's local STEMaction facility (a HUGE thank you to them!). There, some progress was made on prototypes, and people had the benefit of face-to-face interaction for the first time in nearly a week. When school facilities were finally opened again towards the end of week 3, the team hit the ground running, seeking to make up for lost time. Although considerable time was lost to midterms and the snowstorm, the Space RAIDers are optimistic, and are ready to enthusiastically take these challenges head-on.
