Game #9: at Shawnee Mission Northwest October 2, 2010 WASHBURN RURAL 0 SHAWNEE MISSION NW 0 (2 OT) In a rematch of last year's Class 6A state semi-final, Washburn Rural and Shawnee Mission Northwest battled through regulation and two overtimes before finally settling for a 0-0 draw. In the opening minutes of the game, the Cougars took advantage of a strong wind and generated some early chances against the Junior Blues' defense. Northwest gained even more momentum when Anthony Schmiedeler was sent off with a red card and Rural was forced to play a man down for the rest of the contest. Rural's defense would hold strong as the Junior Blues kept the game scoreless for the remainder of the half behind a couple of outstanding saves from goalkeeper Casey Murphy. In the second half, the strong wind allowed the Junior Blues to threaten Northwest's defense with more regularity. Rural's first dangerous opportunity of the game came just minutes into the second half when Keven Thomas hit a great pass behind the Cougar defense to Austin Shiney. Shiney hit a hard left footed shot towards the goal, but Northwest's keeper made an outstanding save to keep the score tied. The game was back and forth for the rest of regulation with each team having opportunities to grab the lead. With less than 20 seconds remaining, Rural had its best chance of the match when Ben Sullivan drove a cross into the box after a Northwest foul. Shiney took Sullivan's pass and volleyed it across the face of the goal where Thomas headed it just over the crossbar. In the first overtime, the Cougars took the wind and created a couple of shots but Murphy was able to stop each opportunity. In the second overtime, Rural's best chances came on a shot from Nick Gideon and a scramble in front of the Northwest goal. Neither opportunity would result in the game winner and the Junior Blues had to settle for the tie. Rural is now 7-1-1 on the season and will travel to Emporia for an important Centennial League matchup on Monday, October 4th!
