Many of Telemann's surviving orchestral suites were written during his post as the musical director of Frankfurt. Close proximity to the Darmstadt court allowed for extensive exchange of musicians on numerous occasions. Many of Telemann's overtures have concertante instrument roles. Telemann was known to express dislike in the extroverted display of virtuosity in the Italian solo concerto and instead favored this type of construction.
