Driver: #27 Gilles Villeneuve (Canada) Car: Ferrari 126 C2 Engine: Ferrari 021: 1496cc, 120° V6 turbo, mid-engine, longitudinally mounted Gearbox: Ferrari 6-speed manual Grand Prix 2 power rating in race/qualifying: 540/580 HP Grand Prix 2 weight: 595kg Tyres: Goodyear 'A' compound (Hard) Fuel: Agip 102 RON Car failure probability: 13282/32767 [40.5%] Difficulty: Ace (no driver aids)
Another action-packed race:
-Ran the same gear ratios as qualifying, which was ideal for slip-streaming but capped the clean-running pace (even if it did save some fuel). GV did not achieve fastest lap, which is a rarity this season. -I was black-flagged (10 second speed penalty) for cutting the chicane, but it wasn't intentional. -Fell off the road at the Curva Parabolica whilst battling Pironi. It is easy to run wide there, especially in dirty air. I kept the car together and amazingly regained the track without losing too much momentum. -Patrese was blocking, and I unintentionally fishtailed him into a spin. -Whilst lapping Derek Warwick I perhaps caused him to lose control and crash out. -I was extremely fortunate to once again suffer a minor failure close to the pits, and within the one-stop window. This is the second brake problem of the year, but it wasn't as drastic (or fatal) as the failure at the Pacific race. -I also rammed Piquet off the road, and he suffered damage. His two-stop strategy was ruined. He fought back, setting very fast laps and getting back into contention before a final technical failure: a loose wheel. -Pironi was catching near the end, and a Ferrari 1-2 battle seemed certain before an unknown technical failure caused his retirement. He was classified 11th (five laps down), so the nature of the failure wasn't listed. -Both championships are looking likely.
