Crash Site Visitation. North American AT-6D 42-85065 On 24, January 1948, 2nd Lt. Gordon A. Zempel, USAF Reserve, took off from San Bernadino Air Force Base in California to fly a local proficiency flight. The aircraft had been missing since that date and was not found until 6, August 1948 near Big Bear, CA. north west of Fawnskin. 2nd Lt. Zempel, 23, served as a B-17 bomber pilot during World war ll.
