Sendai is a city is the political and economic center of Japan's Tohoku Region. Although Sendai is a large city, it is known throughout Japan as a modern city which is in harmony with nature. Greenery is especially abundant in the center of the city, which has tree-lined streets and parks. As a result, Sendai is called the "City of Trees." Sendai Tanabata Festival represents summer in Sendai where washi-paper is strung on bamboo branches. More than 1,500 decorative bamboo branches, streamers and settings of mechanical dolls form tunnels over the shopping arcades. While the scene is gorgeous and impressive, another highlight is the colorful streamers decorated by citizens in each local area.
