In 2008 Senator Obama pledged that if elected his administration would "Secure our chemical plants by setting a clear set of federal regulations that all plants must
follow, including improving barriers, containment, mitigation and safety training, and wherever possible, using safer technology, such as less toxic chemicals." On August 1st, 2013 President Obama issued an executive order directing his agencies, including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to improve their disaster prevention standards. This is the beginning step in fulfilling his promise, but it does not guarantee that our families will be safe from leaks and explosions at chemical facilities. The EPA has the authority under the Clean Air Act to require chemical facilities to use the safest possible processes in order to prevent chemical catastrophe.
