Western governments scrambled to evacuate their nationals from Eritrea on Saturday (6/6) after Ethiopia sent airplanes to bomb Asmara airport in escalating hostilities between the two African countries. Weeks of tension between Ethiopia and Eritrea degenerated into open warfare on Friday (5/6) with the two sides bombarding each other at Mekele and Asmara and opening up a new front near the Eritrean port of Assab. The captured MiG-23 pilot, identified by the Eritrean foreign ministry as Colonel Bezabeh Petros, was a second-time prisoner in Eritrea.
