(Sacramento) -- The California State Assembly passed a measure that would outlaw so-called, "conversion therapy" for children under 18, which uses psychotherapy in an attempt to convert and convince gay or lesbian youth that they are heterosexual. The legislation, Senate Bill 1172, authored by Senator Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) now goes back to the Senate for a final vote. Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles), the first openly gay person in the nation to hold the position of Speaker of a legislative body, advocated the passage of SB 1172 on the Assembly floor by saying, "This, in my opinion, is an abusive practice in the guise of therapy." Speaker Pérez, went on to share about the experiences of the LGBT community and the difficulty of personal journeys to acceptance. Speaker Pérez ended his floor presentation in favor of AB 1172 by saying, "It helps protect children from activities, as well meaning as they may be, that subject them to incredible challenges to their humanity and put their lives at risk."
