Cabin in the Woods was one of the very first songs The Be Good Tanyas ever recorded, back in '99. Jolie introduced the song to us in Vancouver, probably at one of our first get-togethers - it was written by a friend of hers in San Francisco, 'Hobo' (now 'Obo') Martin McCrory
At one of our coffehouse/open mic gigs we had been 'discovered' by Futcher, a producer/engineer/teacher at Vancouver's Columbia Academy of Recording Arts. Futcher had us come in to the school studio now and then so that his students could record us, and we recorded this song there. We'd show up at the recording school with all our instruments, and all sit in a row on stools while Futcher's students set up mics around us. We recorded the songs the same way we would do them in the livingroom - very unselfconsciously, very spontaneously. None of us had spent much time in a recording studio before, and had no idea how it all worked. We barely knew how to play our instruments.Futcher hit the record button, we did a couple of takes to tape, and that was it. I overdubbed the mandolin part after playing the drum part live with brushes on Jolie's fiddle case. recorded by Futcher at Columbia Academy, Vancouver 1999
At that time we had access to a little A-frame cabin in the woods way up Cypress Mountain - a friend of mine owned it. We'd head up there often - along a barely-passable road. Whenever other musicians were in town on tour we'd bring them up the mountain for an overnight adventure. We were so excited about the music - so many nights were spent up at that cabin, passing guitars around and singing these songs way up there in the woods. Cabin in The Woods, of course, was a favourite at those sessions.
