My name is Jason D. Page and I am a Light Painting Photographer. I was contacted by the America's Got Talent casting director early this year and asked if I would like to audition for their show. At first I said NOPE, I told her that I what I do is pretty boring to watch and I didn't think I was right for the show. Normally I shoot landscapes, my images take 5-20 minutes to create, and I shoot for hours or even several nights to get one single image. The casting director said the entire light painting performance had to be less than 90 seconds. She was pretty insistent that I try out for the show and about the fact that the producers WANTED light painting photography on the show this season because they thought it was the hot new thing.....I told her I would put something together and send it over. This video is what I put together. It is not really the type of light painting I do but the theme is good verses evil, I picked a song and tried to choreograph the light movements to go with the music. They freaked out, CALLED me said they loved it and I would be going to Tampa for the live audition. I was pretty amped even though I was not really happy with what I had sent in, but the thought of massive mainstream exposure got me pretty fired up. I worked my ass off with help from Johnny, Geoff, Katie, and my Wife....We choreographed a much better version that the one you see here, It was a performance I was proud of.....So the waiting began.....I waited and waited for the phone call telling me all the details of when I would be going to Tampa. It never came. I later found out that I was the back up plan for the producers because they also contacted a light painting troop by the name of The Aurora Light Painters. The Aurora Light Painters performed on the Austin audition (THE ONE BEFORE TAMPA) and they did great. The audience loved it and they made it to Vegas! I was bummed to find out that I had been in second place all along never knowing I was even in a race. Even though I didn't make it on the show its great that light painting did. I wish The Aurora Light Painters great success and I hope that they can be good ambassadors for Light Painting Photography.

The image at the end is the photograph I created live in the video. While the performance takes place the shutter of my photo camera remains open and records the light in one single exposure. The light painting photograph at the end is straight out of the camera, there is NO digital manipulation. I record the light painting with a photo camera and a video camera with the video signal being feed into a live light painting software to create the trailing effects.

The way I envisioned my light painting performance for AGT would have been to have the light trailing video feed (with light trailing effect) projected up onto two large screen either side of the stage. Then I would have had the video feed switch to the camera feed and have the image that I created live on stage to be projected onto the screens for the audience to see.
