Willie Neal Johnson & the Gospel Keynotes flew the gospel flag longer and higher than most groups, and Johnson was gigging right up until his death a couple of years ago. If their later recordings suffered slightly from cheesy electronic backings, their early discs are truly soulful, and the singing was never less than top-notch. The Keynotes were fond of "converting" soul songs, with their best-known being "Jesus You've Been Good to Me," their version of an Independents album track, "Baby I've Been Missing You." But how could we ignore their gospelised rendition of the ultimate soul cheating song, "Dark End of the Street" for this list?
