Article:
In this brief article, How to Stop Stuttering - 3 Keys, I'd like to share with you three of the most important aspects of becoming a fluent speaker. I've termed these aspects as keys because, they are critical to achieving the kind of fluency many of you desire.

The first key is to realize that our focus should be shifted, as quickly as possible, from "how to stop stuttering" to "speaking more fluently." And, this, speaking fluently, is a learnable skill. It does not matter how long one may have stuttered or if stuttering is genetic, one can learn to speak more smoothly and fluently. Why is this realization so important?

First, it gives you hope. If you believe that you can do something about your current situation, you'll have more hope for the future, yes? Second, if you believe that once you learn what to do and how to do it, and then practice those behaviors you are virtually assured of success, you will be more confident and likely to persist until you see that success. Hope and confidence are two of the major benefits of this key.

The second key is to shift your thinking about yourself as a speaker. While you may need to acknowledge that you sometimes stutter, you do not want to take ownership of stuttering. It is not who you are, but what you do, for now. Your mental shift will include seeing yourself as a great communicator or excellent speaker. This shift has to overwrite the current thought that, "I am a stutterer!" Does this make sense? It's not easy, but it is absolutely necessary to make this shift, not only in how you think about yourself, but also in what you say and how you refer to yourself in the presence of others.

The third and final key, is to continue to practice whatever it is that is working for you until you do not have to practice anymore. How will you know when that is? You'll just know, because you will no longer need to practice. Your new pattern of speaking will be natural and you will no longer think of yourself as a stutterer. How long does this take? For many people, it will take years. Of course, you will probably see some results in weeks and months. But a more permanent transformation usually takes a while. But as I always say, the time will pass anyway, so why not do something productive with it. You'll need to make a commitment to stick with whatever you're doing until you are experiencing the results want, no matter how long it takes. The good thing is that, with this kind of commitment and proper practice, the results you seek are pretty much guaranteed.

Well, I hope this article was and is helpful. Whether you use my strategies of someone else's, I think these keys still apply. Let me know what you think.
