Here's me talking about which U.S. carriers are best for root and custom ROMs plus a little bit about how much my monthly bills are on AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon. Also, pre-paid options may be a good way to save money if you are on WiFi mostly.
For AT&T users, you can keep using AT&T service, just buy T-Mobile version of the phone you want to buy, use Cellunlocker.net to unlock your SIM, then pop in your AT&T SIM, everything works flawless including voice, data, SMS, HSPA, and 4G LTE.
For Verizon users, you can grab developer's edition which come with unlocked bootloaders. But try to avoid Verizon if you can for rooting and custom ROMs, they are just a pain in the butt.
T-Mobile and Sprint phones both have unlocked bootloaders, best U.S. carriers for rooting and custom ROMs.
Prepaid options are good way to also save a ton of money, you will pay much less monthly without all the extra fees added by carriers (like FCC fee, premium 4G LTE fee, etc..etc...).
