Busoni’s 1909 ‘Berceuse’ became the seventh piece of his set of ‘Elegies’, which marked a new direction in his music, away from the tradition of German romanticism, towards a style freer in tonality and expression. In his later orchestral version of the ‘Berceuse’, Busoni subtitled it "The man's lullaby at his mother's coffin".
