Yes, you read it right, I'm comparing different sodas. This was a request from a Live Lean TV viewer who wanted to know if they should be drinking diet soda or regular soda to lose weight.
Big Disclaimer: I have to be upfront, with a big disclaimer, saying that I do not support drinking soda.
Water should be your biggest liquid ally when it comes to optimal health and weight loss. If your goal is to live the lean lifestyle, and get faster weight loss results, stick to "vitamin W", pure and refreshing water. Water gives you everything you need.
But no matter how many times I say that, some people just can't give up soda.
At the end I reveal a third soda alternative, other than water, that is zero calories, and contains natural sweeteners from a plant called stevia.
Is that diet soda, regular soda, or stevia soda?
Lets find out by digging into what is the best type of soda for you to drink, for weight loss.
Diet Soda vs Regular Soda
Since diet soda is zero calories, that should be a good thing for weight loss, right? As you know, the key to weight loss is to burn more calories than what you take in.
So most people would assume that a zero calorie drink, like diet soda, should be pretty good. But lets look a little bit deeper at the ingredients.
Diet soda is zero calories because the sugar is replaced by artificial sweeteners and other chemicals that are probably just eating away at our insides.
I also read a study that tested people who drank diet soda versus people who drank regular soda for three years.
The study concluded that the people who drank diet soda actually gained more body fat.
Is that possible?
How does a person who drinks a zero calorie soda gain more fat versus a person who drinks a regular soda that contains 150 calories and over 40 grams of sugar.
Well it's not just about comparing calories. It's also important to look at how the sodas affect your hunger.
The chemicals and artificial sweeteners in diet sodas can increase your appetite, hunger, and cravings for sugar and junk food.
So even though diet soda is zero calories, it's deceiving because it may cause people to consume more calories at the end of the day.
In other words, people are eating more food, because they're hungrier.
Now this is just one study, but if you find drinking diet soda increases you hunger compared to regular soda, maybe you should switch to regular soda.
For example, maybe that 150 calories and 40 grams of sugar from regular soda ends up being less than the extra calories that you'd consume from binging on foods, since your cravings are elevated.
This is something you'll have to test for yourself.
Lets move on to the third alternative that is a zero calorie soda, sweetened with a natural sweetener called stevia.
Is Stevia Soda Healthy?
So if you love soda but want to lose weight, try to find a zero calorie, stevia sweetened soda in the organic section of your grocery store.
Bottom line: is diet soda bad for weight loss?
Try to find a zero calorie soda, that is naturally sweetened with stevia.
