2017 Netflix movie review: To the Bone follows Ellen (aka Eli) a girl with anorexia nervosa as she struggles with recovery, recovery programs, and a group home. The actor Lily Collins who previously had an eating disorder seemingly lost a lot of weight to play the role of Eli or Ellen. For that reason, I thought that NetFlix was in the wrong. I found the portrayal of eating disorders (EDNOS, Binge Eating, Bulimia, and Anorexia) to be very accurate, the ED behaviors were on full display and I think that is a good thing if someone wants to really see what an eating disorder is truly like. I liked Keanu Reeves as Dr. Beckham, his tough love style is in line with what I think is needed in most cases. I wasn't a big fan of the Luke & Ellen love story part of the film, it didn't seem necessary to me. Susan, played by Carrie Preston was excellent at showing support but mostly not knowing what to do. Pearl with the feeding tube showing us what is possibly right around the corner for Ellen was heart breaking. Judy (Lily Taylor) as her biological mom was powerful when she tells her "she is ok with accepting that she may want to die" was honest and very hard to watch. Overall, as you can tell, I really liked this film. I only wish that the lead role was not played by someone who in the past has had an eating disorder. Actors lose and gain weight for roles all the time, but when someone has a history of an eating disorder, they should not do this, it is VERY dangerous and I don't support it. Marti Noxon does an excellent job of directing and writing in an effort to showcase eating disorders, their damage, and ultimately she leaves us with a glimmer of hope, which is what we all want when it comes to eating disorders... Hope.
