Ohio Health has eight member hospitals and nine affiliate hospitals throughout Ohio. We also have numerous out-patient facilities throughout Ohio. Their systems run on pSeries hardware for many of the clinical systems with an AIX operating system. They have, between two primary and second sites, where they run systems at either site. Backups are critical in our clinical environment because it affects patient care. They use Tivoli Storage Manager for our backup environment. Tivoli Storage Manager writes directly to the primary and it gets replicated to the second data center. Using a disk-based backup method, they have shaved seven hours off admin processing time because they don't have to write off-site copies.

"I'm Celeste Grone. I work for Ohio Health as a Senior Technical Specialist.
We have eight member hospitals and nine affiliate hospitals throughout Ohio. We also have numerous out-patient facilities throughout Ohio. There's about 1800 beds with the 8 member hospitals. Our systems we run on pSeries hardware for many of our clinical systems with an AIX operating system. We have, between the two primary and second sites, we can run systems at either site. In fact, we run clinical systems for long periods of time at our second site with no impact to our clinical environment or user environment. Backups are critical in our clinical environment because it affects patient care. If a system isn't available, patients don't get their medications on time, an image may not be available for a physician who is in surgery, a patient may not be moved to the right location because their bed tracking system isn't available. We use Tivoli Storage Manager for our backup environment. Initially we had one tape silo and TSM would write data to the tape silo and every day we would eject the tapes and send them off site to our vaulting company. Tape has a lot of problems. There's never enough tape drives. There's never enough tape media. There's contention when we're trying to run a restore. There may not be a tape drive available and the restore has to wait until there is a tape drive available. We took tape out of our environment. We connected a disk-based backup device to our Tivoli Storage Manager and we put an identical system at our second data center, so Tivoli Storage Manager writes directly to the primary and it gets replicated to the second data center. Using a disk-based backup method, we've shaved seven hours off our admin processing time because we don't have to write off-site copies. We also shaved 6 hours of our nightly backup window. It went from 14-hour window to just 8 hours. I love working with Tivoli Storage Manager. I love having the flexibility in my job and the support from management to do really neat things like disk-based backups and disaster recovery at a second site. Smart, in our environment, is moving away from a huge tape silo that takes up a lot of floor space and uses up a lot of energy to a smaller disk system, that's smart.
