In 2011, the Poverty-Environment Initiative supported the Ministry of Finance to undertake a review of the Public Environmental Expenditure (PEE) for Financial Years of the 10th Plan (2008/09 and 2009/10) to review the budgets and expenditures allocated to environment and climate change activities both at the central and local Government levels.
The analysis revealed that about 6% of the Government Budget is put towards achieving environmental sustainability objectives, a clear increase from previous years which demonstrates the commitment of the Government to Sustainable Development.
The review was very well received by many of the stakeholders and revealed important trends and gaps of environmental expenditures at the national and local government levels and the findings have been catalytic in drawing attention to the required levels of investment in the environment for sustainable development, and in highlighting the economic importance of the environment.
