Sometimes you can recognize a game by simply listening to the sound effects. But what are THE five most iconic sound effects in games? Let's find out! And keep in mind that we are talking sound effects here... not game music.

5. Countdown timer - Mario Kart

Yup, this is the sound you hear at the beginning of each race in Mario Kart. It's the kick start for three laps of fun. It's a very useful sound effect as it gives you a boost if you time your acceleration exactly right. We've always enjoyed Mario Kart and it's just a matter of time before we will be hearing this sound on the Wii U.

4. Secret chime - The Legend of Zelda
This is sound has become symbolic for the satisfaction of finding a secret or finishing a puzzle in The Legend of Zelda. This famous Nintendo series is full of awesome audio cues. Each achievement in the game comes with it's own sound. But hearing the Secret Chime always puts a smile on our face.

3. Rings - Sonic The Hedgehog
Hearing this many, many times in a row means that you are on a roll! Collecting rings has been an important aspect of almost every Sonic game. Rings are to Sonic what a med pack is to a COD soldier or a mushroom to Mario. Collecting one ring sounds awesome, but running at 3000 miles per hour collecting hundreds of rings is just awesome.

2. Alarm! - Metal Gear Solid
This is the sound of failure. The alert sound effect in the Metal Gear Solid series means that you have been spotted by an enemy. You also get a visual cue as the sound effect is accompanied by the famous exclamation mark. This sound has been haunting players since Metal Gear Solid came out on the Playstation. O and this sound means you can grab a bag of chips and a fresh coke cause you'll be here for a while.

1. Coins -- Super Mario Bros
That is the sound is the sound of happiness. Video game sound effects simply don't get more iconic than the coin sound in Super Mario Bros. The enormous success of Mario has made sure that even non gamers instantly recognize the coin sound. Hearing this sound brings back sweet childhood memories. We love it.

We really enjoyed creating this Top 5. So much so that we're going to keep going by giving you a little challenge. In a moment you will hear a bunch of start up sounds that belong to different game systems. List the systems in the right order in the comment section below
