Dr. Eric Nelson, professor of history, recently received two recognitions for his outstanding teaching at Missouri State. Last spring, he was named a recipient of the 2012 Governor's Award for Excellence in Education. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon and state education leaders recognized Dr. Nelson, as well as 14 other Missouri faculty members.

Then in November, Dr. Nelson was named a Missouri Professor of the Year. The awarded is sponsored by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. In 2012, CASE named 31 state award winners. A panel of judges then determined four national winners from those finalists. Dr. Nelson was selected as a top national educator.

CASE and the Carnegie Foundation have been partners in offering the U.S. Professors of the Year awards program since 1981. Additional support for the program is received from a number of higher education associates, including Phi Beta Kappa, which sponsors an evening congressional reception.

On the court to congratulate Dr. Nelson is Missouri State President Clif Smart. Ladies and gentlemen, please acknowledge Dr. Nelson's outstanding contributions to higher education. He is in The BancorpSouth Academic Spotlight.
