Cloud, mobile and IoT arethree3 of the macro trends driving digital transformation, but the underlying enabler is pervasive connectivity. That in turn is driving the need for a transformation of the Wide Area Network and giving rise to the connected enterprise.

The pace of change brought on by digital transformation is staggering, and it's impacting businesses of all types and sizes. The penalty for not keeping up is no longer just slowing sales; it could be no sales. The traditional WAN, which really hasn't changed much in the last 20 years, was not built for these rapidly changing conditions, and today is becoming a significant inhibitor to a company's ability to evolve and transform itself.

The historical enterprise topology has been the manufacturing plant distribution center, corporate headquarters, and then branch or retail outlets — and, of course, the people who worked within those. The branch and retail outlet formed the edge of the network and also the point of presence for employees, customers, and suppliers, as well as a source of information and insight being brought back into the business in the emerging connected enterprise.

The network extends well beyond brick and mortar to span the Internet and connect everything like kiosks, sensors, cameras, digital signage, vehicles, and, of course, people. As a result the Wide Area Network has to connect everything and be more scalable, secure, reliable, automated, and agile in order to keep up with the changing business conditions

Perhaps nowhere is the need for WAN transformation more profound than at the edge. At Cradlepoint, we refer to the new paradigm of connecting people places and things to the Wide Area Network as the Elastic Edge. It's constantly, expanding, contracting, adapting — it moves and evolves as the business needs dictate.

We believe wireless is essential to providing the elasticity needed by the connected enterprise. At Cradlepoint, we're providing a pathway for our customers from 4G LTE to game-changing technologies like gigabit LTE and 5G. Elasticity also means that the WAN’s edge will have to be software-defined, policy-driven and highly orchestrated in order to eliminate all of the complexity of today's WANs.

How these new WANs are being built and utilized is also changing significantly. We're rapidly moving out of the era of “Build-Your-Own” to one of “Consume-as-a-Service.” Much like we've seen with music services like Spotify, in this new model you'll be able to spin up and down connections, capacity, and services when and where you need them and only pay for what you're using. That provides both elasticity and utility.

At Cradlepoint, we're passionate about making our customer successful. It's what drives every employee in the company. And that's why we're so excited to be enabling this next-generation WAN for the connected enterprise with our Elastic Edge technology and solutions.
