This is the technique I use to blunt the tips of my dreads.
Step one:
Fold the loose hairs into a loop and press them against the side of the dread.

Step two:
Crochet the long, loose hairs into the dread so that the tip firms up and starts to lock.

Step three:
Any loose hairs at the tip? Stick your crochet hook through the middle of the dread and slide it out to collect the tiny hairs.

Step four:
Pull 'em into the dread with a rocking motion. Do not do the quick, short jabs you do while crocheting normally.

Step five (optional): Slap some wax on there and melt it in!
