Carter's Story In September of 1965 in college when I attended a tie dye workshop that my mother was teaching for incoming freshmen at UC Santa Cruz, I was immediately captivated by the way the dyes flowed over the cotton. For the next twenty years I was dyeing silk for wall hangings and selling thrugh galleries all over the country. In 1977 I dyed 2,000 yard of silk charmeuse for Julio for his first collection and another 2,000 Yar silk chiffon for Harriet Selwyn line Fragments. Borth lines were big successes but no one knew who dyed the silk. In 1983 I hit a wall and with sales droppping after selling nearly 20,000 pieces I had lost the passion for tie dye and worked as a carpenter for the next tow years. In 1985 after seeing a banner that I had dyed 15 years earlier, I realized that by perfecting the dyeing I had been moving away from the creative energy that had so attracted me to tie dye in the first place.
