These stories deal with the Mayan concept of Ajaaws, the guardian spirits of the hills. There are five stories about encounters with Ajaaws, three in the form of animals, and two in human form. They are narrated in the original Achi, with English subtitles. All of these stories come from Rabinal, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala. Many have to do with Kajyub', the mountain above the colonial town of Rabinal, which was the center of the precolumbian Achi civilization. It is much smaller than Tikal or Palenque, but it is much easier for the descendants of the people who used to live there to incorporate it into their daily life.
