Syria faces a difficult choice: either the government and the moderate opposition sit down at the negotiating table to restore peace to the country , or the country is plunged into a new round of fratricidal war. Moscow and Damascus would like the parties to the conflict to choose the first option — the path to national reconciliation.

Monday, December 25, President Vladimir Putin discussed with members of the security Council of the Russian Federation the issues of the Syrian settlement and preparation for Congress of National dialogue Syria, to be held in Sochi on 29-30 January 2018. Analysts wonder whether the Kremlin and the Assad government will be able to convince the moderate opposition to sit down at a round table to discuss the future of The country such a dialogue is long overdue, experts believe. Head of the Syrian opposition delegation at the eighth round of talks in Astana Ahmad Toma said that the opposition leaders will hold consultations on participation in the Congress of the national dialogue. "We would like to hold consultations with our military and political leaders in order to make a final decision on our position," he said.

Russian Deputy foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said that the countries of the region, including Egypt and Iraq, as well as China expressed interest in the presence of Syrian national dialogue as observers at the Congress. As for Washington, it is still waiting for a special invitation. And Russia is ready to invite the United States as an observer to the Congress.

So far, the US and Israel are not particularly enthusiastic about the upcoming round table. They are most likely more satisfied with the continuation of the war and further destabilization of Syria. Washington and tel Aviv still believe that the Assad regime can be overthrown by force of arms
