Из фильма «Души движенье»

Father Sabbatius (we listen his words in the film): In fact, the life of the monastery, all of it - under seven locks. And no matter how much you are telling people about it, it's still only for a purpose to hide, to close this life under another lock, because ... Well how is possible to tell what happens in the soul of each human being? The soul of every person is unique, and the way, - the way of each soul is unique too.

Well, when I was preparing to retire to the monastery, I already knew that in the monastery no one performs the job, that he was performing in the world - well, that is the custom generally, - and suddenly the elder with whom I traveled, said to me: "You do not leave, do not leave the photography, the monastery still needs photographers, well, you edited books in the world - and now you need to make a book about Valaam too ..."

Well, then came the Father Superior and blessed me to continue to work as a photographer. Then I took the camera and went out. I was walking, but I hade a feeling inside that I would be happy to throw out the camera right now and that I don't want to deal with this any more. Although this is my favorite job ... but suddenly I have got this strong feeling... rejection, denial of this all.

And I could not stand it and I hastened at once to the elder that was living at the skete of All Saints - it was the schemamonk Father Raphael, he was such a loving, joyful, always kind man, small, such a low height, and here I am telling him my feelings, and he smiled and said, "Well of course , you were doing this of vanity when you were living in the world, you liked to do this, weren"t you? And any creative artwork is based on vanity.

And here you are doing this out of obedience, so the temptations have begun at once, hitting have begun, attacks at you." I said , " What shall I do, father? Shall I refuse obedience?" He replied: "You can't refuse the obedience, but you should accepted being humbled and you should understand that this gift is not your personal achievement, that you did not created by yourself something remarkable supernatural, but this is your gift from God.

And for Him we all are here and for Him we are working. In the past best years there was up to 20 people working in obedience in the photographic studio of Valaam Monastery. They were produced all kind of albums and separate photos, but names of photografers was not saved.

History has informed us only one name of photographer, but this was related to entirely different matter. He lived in the same skete of All Saints and he had there a workroom, without light, without electricity, he was carring water in buckets, diluted developers in his cell, he was walking with a big camera shooting views of Valaam.

The only thing was special about him - he was consistent predicting the day of his own death many years before it happened, that's the only reason he was mentioned in the history of Valaam Monastery as a monk Arsenius who died in a certain year, a certain day of a certain month, he was a photographer in obedience, he fulfilled this obedience for many years. No one can tell now, exactly which photographs are product of his work.

There is such a proverb: "Manuscripts does not burn." Well, they doesn't - in the Lord. Because it is possible to burn paper, but what has been already written by a man - and this also applies to photography - [will remine forever] - - there person took a photo - - -... - "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner..."

One day a friend of mine arrived to visit me and he said: "Friend, I came under the full impression of your photos and I prepared to see here such a harsh island, grim life of such stringent monks, and here I see - you have here merely heaven! You are living, he says, there the sun is shining, everything is green, a water around, people are walking and smiling, enjoy such a life. And the one who look at your - photographs - sees that they depict everything sombre, rocks, ice is everywhere... "

I replied: "You should visit n winter when we have snow storms, and you should spend here at least a week, I think that you would say, ..."Father Sabbatius, your pictures are too beautiful, in fact, the life you have here is much more somber." If people only knew how hard it is to be a monk, no one would go to the monastery. But if people only knew what a blessing to be a monk...
