Spice Up the Deal (SUD) is a two-year pilot project implemented by Mercy Corps—funded by the Ford Foundation—in Indonesia's Maluku Province. The project works with farmers, traders, and other key actors involved in the production, processing, and export of clove and nutmeg on the islands of Ambon and Seram. Using a market development approach, the goal of the project is to increase economic opportunities for spice farmers through higher production, improvements in quality, fostering of 'win-win' business relationships between farmers groups and buyers, and improving the ability of the value chain to benefit poor farmers.
