Northern Wisconsin suffered a major rain/hail/windstorm Thursday morning, Sept. 4, 2014. Much of the area was flooded including the city of Hayward.
The swamps a few miles north of Hayward soaked up a major amount of water which subsequently was released into Smith Lake and then Hayward which began to feel this effect the night of Friday, Sept. 5, while the original floodwaters had subsided to a considerable degree.
This video follows the swollen Smith Creek as it leaves Smith Lake on its way south, passing through the dam near the Hayward hospital which did not break, as was suspected by some. Smith Creek is then shown crossing Nyman Avenue (at 1:35) before entering the pond by the Senior Center. The pond feeds two outlets, the main one (shown at 2:10) causing the major flooding which is shown at the end of the video crossing Highway 63 near the Holiday station.
