River Svir is located in Leningrad's oblast, Russian Federation, it runs between Lake Onega and Lake Ladoga, During WWII when the Finnish army advanced from Ladoga's Karelia to South they attacked across the river Svir with heavy casualties, the Finnish army kept their positions until June 1944 and started to retreat after the start of a major Soviet offensive on Karelian Isthmus. During the retreat the Finnish army abandoned great amounts of supplies, including food, the Commander-in-chief Marshall Mannerheim ordered part of these supplies to be distributed to the local population, the rest were ditched to Svir.
