http://bit.ly/burningman2011 Burning Man is one of the most popular gatherings of artists, free thinkers, thrill seekers, and just about anyone else looking to have a good time. This event takes place in the middle of the Black Rock desert to celebrate community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. During Burning Man, an otherwise empty area of the desert becomes Black Rock City, a giant collection of camp sites that are full of people having fun around the clock.

Unfortunately, this gathering doesn't come with excellent mobile service, which can really make communicating and coordinating activities with a group difficult. Burning Man is a fairly large gathering, and finding someone amid the various camp sites can be difficult, especially at night.

Thankfully, a solution to this problem will be available at Burning Man this year. By combining OpenBTS with Voxeo's Tropo (both open source), a localized communications hub can be established that enables attendees with GSM-enabled phones to communicate with one-another at Burning Man. In a very real way, this project will create a completely independent (and functioning) mobile phone service for Burning Man completely independent of existing telecommunication providers' networks.

If you're attending Burning Man, and you'd like to help test this technology yourself, you can find them at the Papa Legba camp.
