Which model will suit your game? It comes down to your ability and your aspirations writes equipment editor James Savage
How do the TaylorMade P760 irons compare to the P790?

Our TaylorMade P760 vs. P790 irons test took place at Leicester Golf Centre where we utilised their Toptracer technology.

We have been raving about the P790 irons ever since they were released just over a year ago.

But the P760 is the newest model and we think both will appeal to a fairly wide-range of golfer.

But which one might suit your game? Read on to find out…
TaylorMade P760 vs. P790 irons – The methodology

These two irons are very closely linked although you wouldn’t necessarily think so at first glance.

The P790 have been a huge success with golfers because they look great and offer fantastic ball speeds and forgiveness.

They have a wide-range of appeal suiting single figure handicappers and 20+ handicappers alike.

But while the performance in the long irons is hitting the right notes for even tour players, some prefer a sleeker look in the shorter irons.

Better players don’t need that added ball speed and forgiveness in the scoring clubs – they want precision and feel.

So TaylorMade tried to put the best bits of the sleeker P770 and P750 in the shorter irons with the ball speed and forgiveness of the P790 in the longer irons. Review: TaylorMade P790 irons

The P760 actually replaces both the P770 and P750.

So which players will be going into the P760 and which will stick with a full set of P790?

As a 15-handicapper, I’d probably expect to go with the latter but as someone who wants to work on his game and improve, I like the idea of something sleeker in the short irons.

So what is the difference in performance between the P760 and P790? Review: TaylorMade P760 irons

TaylorMade P760 vs. P790 irons – The results

When I first tested the P790 irons I thought they were right on the money and have been recommending them highly to everyone.

And when I went for a TaylorMade P760 irons fitting it was hard for me to make a case for the P760 over the P790 looking at the launch monitor numbers.

But only if I was looking at distance.

And when I tested theses two irons head-to-head at Leicester Golf Centre’s Toptracer facility the picture became even clearer.

I spent a lot of time playing the Toptracer nearest the pin game with both these irons. The target was 150 yards.

The front to back dispersion with the P790 was much wider than with the P760.

An absolutely middled shot with the P790 just flew over the back of the green. The P760 seemed to be much tighter and more accurate.

From the launch monitor numbers you can see that the P790 7-iron is 10 yards longer than the P760.

But my fear is that I’m going to see the gaps tightening as I go up into the longer irons.

If I’m hitting the P790 7-iron 165, I need to hit the 5-iron 185 consistently, not just every once in a while.

I’d rather hit my 7-iron 155 and have consistent gaps with my next two clubs.

So which model is right for you?

Well I think it comes down to your ability and your aspirations.

TaylorMade P760 irons review

If you’re a solid, consistent player then I’m struggling to see why you’d favour the P790 over the P760.

The P760 look great and have a fantastic forged feel in the shorter irons but still offer some help and forgiveness in the long irons.

If you struggle to consistently hit your shorter irons then you may benefit from a full set of the P790.

Or you may be a solid player but want to make the game as easy as possible.

Or you may be a player like me who hits the ball reasonably solidly but wants to improve.

I actually feel like the P760 will help me improve. They may not help me shoot my best score tomorrow but with practice and a few lessons I feel like they will help me shoot my best possible scores as I improve.

They make me want to play and make me want to improve.

And ultimately irons are about accuracy, not distance, and I actually feel like I can be more accurate with the shorter P760 irons.
