This event was held on Jan 3 2011 at the traditional home of free speech & democracy in the Forest, Speech House. Organised by HOOF (Hands Off Our Forest) & in particular by Owen Adams, the rally attracted over 2,500 people, despite a bitingly cold day and a snow storm!
The passion for the Forest was very evident throughout, as was the resentment at our local MP's stance on the issue at hand (the rushed legislation which could see all publicly owned Forest resource in the UK sold off to commercial bidders, and the disbandment of the Forestry Commission).
All walks of life and political persuasion was represented - young & old, conventional and eccentric, rich & poor, red, blue, yellow and pink with green spots!
Unfortunately , our local MP, Conservative Mark Harper, decided not to come and contented himself with insulting HOOF from the safe medium of radio. However, Baroness Jan Royall, environmentalist Jonathan Porritt & other key speakers DID attend and inspired those there to carry on the fight, escalate the protest and get the Forest's true voice heard at Westminster.
Local musicians & poets also showed everyone that the age of the protest song is not dead! A CD of music & verse supporting HOOF is now being recorded to support the HOOF campaign.
