The words the woman said at the beginning echos those of the YF-23 designers. Sucks when your program gets canceled, especially when you had designed the happiest airplane in the world.

b00stedrust she was just as maneuverable as the YF22. The 23 had slightly less maneuverability at low speed high AoA, but this was barely noticeable. The reason the 22 won was two fold: one, Lockheed chose to show off that high maneuverability, Northrop did not. Lockheed chose to fire a missile. Northrop did not. Lockheed showed off their plane in a more flashy way, even though all the evidence pointed to the 23 being in almost every way better, and the military said this. 23 was a better plane, but, and here is reason two, they didn't think Northrop could handle the development of the aircraft. Northrop was a little bit in the shitter with the military due to cost over ru,s and delays with the B-2 Spirit they were developing, and Northrop had just won the air tanker project. Plus, the Navy was asking for a new plane as well, and the military thought the 22 could be converted to a Naval variant better that the 23. 23 also cost a bit more, and had slightly more complicated maintenance requirements.

STOP WASTING TAXPAYERS MONEY ON FANTASY PLANES,& BRING BACK PROVEN AIRFRAMES LIKE THE F-14 TOMCAT,INSTEAD OF BUILDING EXPENSIVE STEALTH PLANES THAT LIKE THE RAPTOR F-22 (CAN'T BE OUT IN THE RAIN!?) THE F-35 LIGHTNING(CAN'T BE IN A LIGHTNING STORM!?) I MEAN REALLY! CAN'T TURN,CAN'T RUN,CAN'T CLIMB!? IT'S A BOAT ANCHOR!

It's always sad to see the teams behind the X-32 and the YF-23, they had so much hope...

Oh well... at least we can still fly their planes in Ace Combat :D

This is what happens when engineers force performance goals and requirements into a rushed design; a design that became an after thought.  However, where the government went wrong in this so-called 'competition' is disguising it as just that: a competition, when in reality to the victory went all the spoils.  It would have been much more cost effective, and the wiser, to extend development of both aircraft platforms instead of just awarding the biggest military contract in the history to just one company under ridiculous time constraints.   Just look at the mess the over budget trillion dollar F-35 project (lifetime) has become today?  With no competition to keep it in check, the tab just keeps running up and there are no other options.

+The1980Philip Hence, "rushed design". No blame is being put on the minds behind the engineering of this aircraft. Its a combination of the time constraints they were given, and, of the many workable / possible designs they could have chosen, they went with something that was not applicable to the requirements asked. Lobbyist and government cut backs greatly affected / negated what should have been more dedicated platforms for each variation.

+robert lockhart "This is what happens when engineers force performance goals and requirements into a rushed design" Allow me to correct you. The ENGINEERS didn't force anything, The engineers warned early on that it would be impossible for one plane to fulfill all the roles the government wanted it to fill, and that to attempt to build such a plane that actually worked properly would be fiendishly expensive, impossible, or both.It was the MIC business execs and their politician lackeys. They forced the engineers to force performance goals and requirements into a rushed design.
