Rupert Murdoch has admitted his wife is "very tough" - during an interview before she leapt up and slapped her husband's attacker during an MPs' hearing.

In the couple's first interview together, the News Corp chief executive and chairman described his Chinese spouse Wendi Deng as a "wonderful mother" and "a very good businesswoman".

The 80-year-old said "a successful man needs a critical wife", while Ms Deng said she always tells him the truth - which may not be the case with all his employees.

She said:

"A successful man is always surrounded by people who praise him. He can't judge which is true, which is false. So I will tell him the truth."

Interviewed on China's CCTV, Ms Deng, 42, also said he was "very easy to get along with" and "is humble to me" - a claim which belies his fearsome reputation.

She also said her husband had told his sons when they got married "they must listen to what their wives say".

Murdoch then saod:

"Oh yes, she is very tough, very tough."

The couple met while she was working at Star Television in Hong Kong and she became an interpreter for him as they visited China.

Murdoch added:

"Who wouldn't fall in love with such a beautiful woman like her? I fell in love with her and I asked her. She said no. And it took me a long time to persuade her."

The pair have two young children together.

He ended by saying:

"She has taught very fluent Mandarin to my two daughters. Every person can speak Chinese 'except me'. So they just told me things that I need to know."
