32 pupils were selected from Matebeleland North region to represent the province in the National inter-provincial tournament that is going to be held in Masvingo at the before the beginning of the second term.

Nkulumane School was the centre of the record number of chess students who came to tussle it out for the limited positions for qualification into the provincial team. Last year only a handful of students came in compared to the 359 who participated this year. Out of the 359 there were 271 boys and 88 girls from the 26schools that are in the province. This was welcome with great joy by many veterans who had come to witness the selection which had 9 rounds and was held in two days.

Many notable coaches who included Mr Chiadzwa; Thabang Moyo and Moses Mutiforo were selected to coach the students who had qualified so that they can improve in the basics and the theoretical approach which lacked in the number of the students who had qualified. The lack of chess material to improve the number of students was a cause of concern for many coaches who have been in the field for long as they concluded that this could be the gap that might hinder the progress as it will be the cutting point when they compete at national level.

Mr Mpofu the coach of the Gifford chess team pointed out that there has to be a way in which the current scholars can be lured to love the chess literature so that they can go back to the standard that was there in the past years. However scholars from CBC and Girls College showed a great improvement in their chess tactics as many of them managed to qualify.

Mrs M Ncube who is the Head in charge for chess in Matebeleland said she was impressed that chess is becoming a major game in the city and she hopes cooperate world will see its necessity in the schools. With all the preparations at hand a lot is left to be seen from the kings of the the City of Kings if they can be able to checkmate those from other provinces.
