Mel Mermelstein (Leonard Nimoy) and Jane Mermelstein (Blythe Danner) live the good life in Southern California with their four delightful children. He operates a pallet manufacturing company where he maintains a private Holocaust museum dedicated to the members of his family who were murdered at the Auschwitz concentration camp in the summer of 1944.
Mel shares his experiences with students and writes a letter to the editor complaining about those who deny the Holocaust. When Mel receives a letter challenging him to try for a $50 thousand reward for proving the Holocaust, his requests for assistance from Jewish defense organizations goes unanswered.
Mel turns to William John Cox (Dabney Coleman) a local public interest lawyer, who comes up with legal plan to trap the deniers. When the deniers refuse to consider Mel's acceptance of their offer to prove the Holocaust, Cox files suit in the Superior Court.
The case attracts widespread media attention and the final hearing is televised by all three networks. The Court's landmark ruling is broadcast around the world.
