A torii is a traditional Japanese gate most commonly found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrine, where it symbolically marks the transition from the profane to the sacred (see Sacred-profane dichotomy).
The presence of a torii at the entrance is usually the simplest way to identify Shinto shrines, and a small tori icon represents them on Japanese road maps.
They are however a common sight at Japanese Buddhist temples too, where they stand at the entrance of the temple's own shrine.
No one knows, however, about Torii, where they came from, what for they are there, and since when, though you can see hundreds of thousands tori-i throughout Japan.
They had been there before shrines and temples were constructed.

The concept of a tree of life has been used in biology, religion, philosophy, and mythology. A tree of life is a common motif in various world theologies, mythologies, and philosophies. It alludes to the interconnection of all life on our planet and serves as a metaphor for common descent in the evolutionary sense. The term tree of life may also be used as a synonym for sacred tree.
生命の樹（せいめいのき、英語：Tree of Life）は、旧約聖書の創世記（2章9節以降）にエデンの園の中央に植えられた木。命の木とも訳される。生命の樹の実を食べると、神に等しき永遠の命を得るとされる。
カバラ（ユダヤ教神秘主義）ではセフィロトの木（英語: Sephirothic tree）という。
